Albuquerque has a diverse history. The Spanish arrived in Albuquerque during the mid-16th century. A few settlers and a trading post were established just north of the current site of Albuquerque in the last years of that century. In 1706, Albuquerque's present site was settled and named after the Duke of Albuquerque, viceroy of New Spain. Albuquerque is still nicknamed 'Duke City'.

From that modest beginning Albuquerque has grown to nearly 500,000 citizens. The median age is 24 years old. Eighty six percent of Albuquerque's residents have a high school education or better.
