Tijeras Real Estate Tijeras, (pronounced Tee-hair-us) literally means "knife" as the town is situated between the Sandia and Manzano Mountains just east of Albuquerque. Tijeras is located on Old Route 66, the scenic byway for many years but Route 66 also parallels Interstate 40. Tijeras is a small community of families; some have resided there for hundreds of years as it was the Anasazi gateway to the Rio Grande Valley. It is also a comunity of new residents that have come to escape the bustle of the city but still remain within 20 minutes of the Albuquerque city limits. Tijeras is at the crossroad of Route 66/Interstate 40 and North 14 which is also called the Turquoise Trail. Even though a tiny town, Tijeras boasts a coffee shop, gift shop, boutique, bank, pub and post office. South from Tijeras is NM 244 which takes you past the ranger station where you can get permits for wood and Christmas tree cutting. Continuing on through the Manzano Mountains you will pass many picnic areas. The remains of the Tijeras Pueblo are located just behind the ranger station. Tijeras Pueblo was inhabited from about 1300 to about 1425 and probably had hundreds of residents. There is evidence of a block of 300 rooms, a great kiva and a smaller one with a mosaic floor; both used for ceremonial purposes. This pueblo is a rare example of a Classic Period settlement. The architecture and layout of the vilage are considered pure, uncompromised by developent from peiods after it was abandoned, even after the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors. Because of it's largely undisturbed state it is considered to be of the highest level of national significance to understanding prehistory in the US. Evidence indicates that Tijeras Pueblo was partially abandoned sometime after 1368. It remained relatively empty until approximately 1390 when the second phase was begun; but was completely deserted in 1425. Only a grass covered mound remains where the 300 plus room pueblo was located. The self guided trail is open to the public 7 days a week. For more infomation visit The Friends of Tijeras website!
